The male Wallcreeper (Rotskruiper) I spotted from the bus at moderate speed. Luckily it stayed here a while when we stopped.

On our way from Almaty to the Kokpek pass. Huge poppy fields.

White-crowned Penduline-Tit along the highway to Kokpek pass.

Demoiselle Cranes (Jufferkraan). Part of a large flock crossing the highway to Kokpek pass.

View across the poppy fields to the Tien Shan mountain range. The White-crowned Penduline-Tits were in the trees on the right.

Fields further on with several migrant Tree Pipit on the ground but no luck with Richard's Pipit (Grote Pieper). Several Corn Buntings (Grauwe gors).

Lesser Grey Shrike (Kleine Klapekster) in the fields of the photo above.

Chukar.

Roadside shops in the few villages we crossed.

Near the Kokpek pass. The target bird here was White-capped Bunting.

Dry stony valley east of the Kokpek pass (Sogeti valley system). Good for several specialties (see photos below; also Grey-necked Bunting, Steenortolaan).

Pied Wheatear.

Turkestan Shrike, also called Red-tailed Shrike.

Rufous-tailed Rock-Thrush (Rode Rotslijster).

Asian Crimson-winged Finch (Rode Bergvink) near a well at the foot of the hills of the above photo. On our last visit in this area we also got Mongolian Finch, but not on the ground.

View across the Sogeti valley on the Tien Shan mountain range, from the hills of the above photo. In the plains below we had found Pallas's Sandgrouse (Steppehoen) in the morning.

Charyn canyon.

Detail of the above photo.

In that shady spot of the previous two photos a lone Grey Wolf was sleeping! Hans' favourite mammal!

In the Sogeti valley bottom. Isabelline Wheatear (Izabeltapuit) on top of the bush.

Lesser Whitethroat (Braamsluiper) halimodendri type.

In search of Asian Desert Warbler (Woestijngrasmus) in the Sogeti valley bottom.
