Peene river valley NE Germany 5-9 June 2015
Birding trip report John van der Woude  -
After writing a review about a new birdfinding guide for northeast Germany at the Dutch Birding site, I wanted to see especially the Peene river valley plus its tributaries. This specific area in eastern Germany was new to us and Nollie and I went there early June to get even the latest arriving breeding birds. It was a short trip but definitely worthwhile with nice species like Barred Warbler, Rosefinch, Thrush Nightingale, River Warbler, Penduline Tit, Red-necked Grebe, eagles and many more.

We mainly went along the sites given in the reviewed book: A birdwatching guide to North East Germany and its Baltic Coast by Roger White. We still also used the German birdwatching guide for East Germany (Wagner & Moning - Vögel beobachten in Ostdeutschland).
We drove along the fast highways from Holland and stayed all four nights in hotel Deutsches Haus in the nice little town called Dargun, west of Demmin (see maps below). This hotel was recommended in White's book and we liked it too.
All of the more remarkable bird observations were entered in the field in via the app NaturaList: the yellow dots on the satellite images below.

This short report shows fourteen birding sites in the Peene valley system plus the better bird observations we had there. Photos of birds etc. are in a separate section.
